What is stan culture and why is it toxic?
This popular term is a portmanteau of stalker and fan. First originated from a 2000 song by Eminem which went by the same name. Stan culture can be defined as a hyperbolic obsession towards a particular person, usually a pop celebrity. While this obsession can be directed towards anyone in general, stan culture is synonymous with K-Pop obsession, in particular, BTS.
Now BTS is a South Korean, seven-member boy band that debuted in the early 10s. They gained momentum around 2013, subsequently garnering hundreds of millions of fans. This was all fun and games until the fans evolved into an unhealthy faction of obsessed stans, who are rather fanatical about the boy band and are resistant to any form of criticism towards their idols.
Stan culture is also characterized by harsh reactions towards opinions against the idols. This results in the individual’s bad image in society. This breaks relationships as nothing good was ever born of an unhealthy obsession towards an entity.
This unhealthy practice is evident through incidents like the infamous Twitter hashtag #cutforkookie, this was a virtual campaign started by deranged stans who urged fellow stans to cut their veins to show their apprehension when BTS member Jungkook was rumored dating a girl.
Given the aforementioned incident, it can be inferred that stan culture is toxic enough to lead one into a state of self-harm and suicidal mentality. Such hashtags would hurt the idol themself as they are prevented from taking a personal decision in life because of their toxic, obsessed fandoms.
Another example is when Jungkook crashed his car (he later stated that the mistake was his) with a taxi in a suburban area of South Korea and sustained minor injuries, stans across the world tried to cover this mishap by mass tweeting other hashtags to distract the public from reality.
Such actions must not be tolerated and therefore is a good reason why stan culture can be considered toxic in practice.
However, the BTS ARMY has also contributed generously to many charities and has been vocal in their support for the LGBTQ community as well as the Black community.
Stan culture is not a new concept either, John Lennon, a pivotal member of the rock group, The Beatles was shot dead by an obsessed fan, Mark David Chapman, in New York City.
Stan Twitter also takes all the seriousness of the social networking site and fills it with immature, unwanted tweets about the appearance of K-pop stars. Stans tend to look at physical appearance much more than the talent or the niche that their idols are engaged in.
Having said that, the number of cons outweigh the number of pros with respect to stan culture and hence stan culture must be deemed an unnecessary obsession that needs to be policed and criticized appropriately.
We at Improfane would like to give you a piece of advice quoted by a famous blogger: Steer clear of the deranged stans, and show your admiration for your favorites on your own terms.
